Chapter 6

The men slumbered on the outside of the bed while Erika and Rowan curled in the center, their legs twined together. They’d lain in comfortable silence for an hour or more, Erika’s mind meandering around the topics she’d avoided thinking about since arriving. She’d been too overcome with longing for Geva to think about them until tonight. For the first time in days she’d finally found the peace from those feelings to get back to her center, to focus on the decisions she would need to make soon.

Rowan’s presence was one reminder of the chief concern on her mind. She shifted and retrieved her arm from under the redhead’s languid shoulders, propping her own head on her hand and letting her gaze roam down Rowan’s body, pausing at her lower abdomen. She reached out a tentative hand and rested it lightly below Rowan’s navel on the barely perceptible mound of her pregnancy.

Rowan made a humming sound and laid her own hand over Erika’s. “You’re afraid, aren’t you? So am I.”

“I’m terrified, but at the same time I can’t wait. Simply knowing we’ll be making this happen soon excites the everloving hell out of me. God, I wish he were here now—that’s what we’d be doing if he were.”

Rowan slid her forearm under her head and looked at Erika. “I’m glad to hear that. I’d like it if she had a cousin to be raised with. Of course she’ll have Kris and Issa’s twins, too. Xander and Gabe are growing so fast.”

“Hallie’s pregnant,” Erika blurted. “She told me just before we got here. I don’t know about the others, though. I imagine we’ll hear when it happens.” She grew quiet in response to Rowan’s downcast eyes.

“When you talk to the others, tell them to come? Not for anything like this…” Rowan gestured around her to encompass their four naked bodies. “Just for company. I’m not really used to the solitude, to be honest. I miss people. This is worth it, don’t get me wrong, but I can’t wait to get back to humanity.”

Erika smiled. “Yeah, nine months of this might make me go mad, too. I’ll see what I can do. Maybe make Darius host a baby shower up here.” She laughed, amused by the idea of the stoic Red prepping for a party of giddy, baby-crazy women, though the males of the species were every bit as baby-crazy as the females. That thought made her break out into a full-blown laugh, which Rowan joined, clearly just as aware of the hilarity as Erika was.

When they finally caught their breath, Rowan reached out a hand and gripped Erika’s forearm. “And you … You’re staying right here until it’s time for you to leave. If nothing else, because I want my daughter to be born with a deeper understanding of the strength her aunt possesses.”

Erika stared down at her friend, perplexed. “You mean my penchant for brooding when my man disappears for more than a day or two? Why the hell would you want that?”

Rowan gave her an irritated look and sat up.
